Is the Panamanian Balboa a Sleeper?

I have a friend who is going to Panama for three weeks, and I asked him see if he could pick up a few coins for me. After he left, I started looking at the prices on ebay and was a little surprised at how low the One Balboa is going for. There seems to be a range of prices between about $9.00 to $14.00.

The coins are .900 fine and the same size as a US silver dollar. Maybe I'm missing something here, but I don't think so. I know that many of you hold stashes of .900 US coins for a SHTF scenario, just as I hold a substantial amount of .900 Mexican coins for the same reason, were it to happen here.
(Getting what we can, where we can.)

That purpose aside, It seems to me that these coins are much cheaper than Morgans and Peace dollars, so maybe their melt value is something to be considered. Then again in the SHTF situation, how well would they be received along with silver US coins?

i don't know how well they would be received in person to person barter, but if they're 90% the same as US currency, then i would think they're good to go.
plus, they're an awesome looking coin!
chicks in robes.
chicks in robes.
it's all about the hot chicks in robes....
i mean, i like most of our founding fathers and all, but we really need to get more chicks in robes (preferably with helmets) on our money....

It's Tuesday, the day after TEOTWAWKI:

You: I'd like to buy some corn.
Farmer: Dollars are no good no more/
You: I have silver.
Farmer: Silver is money. You got silver dollars or eagles?
You: I have these Balboas.
Farmer: You said you had silver dammit!
You: These are made of silver - look!
Farmer: Ball..bony?
You: Balboa!
Farmer: Where's the pretty lady with the profile, or the nice broad in the robes. I only know American silver.
You: These are money.
Farmer: Not for American corn they ain't! Maybe you can buy tacos and beans with Ballbonies!
You: Balboas!
Farmer: That's what I said dammit! Look, I normally charge a silver eagle for six ears. You seem like a decent fellow, and you don't look like a wetback, so I'll give you three ears for two Ballboners, take it or leave it.

Me: What If I melt one down and make a bullet to shoot your sorry ass?

Farmer: Well, in that case, I guess you can have six ears after all.

Farmers aren't stupid people. That whole scenario was just dumb. .900 26.73. Farmers can do math and most even have a calculator your high and mighty Doctorship.

If you already have USA 90%, get some Balboas for added insurance. We may be needing to jump the border ourselves someday.

Besides, we wouldn't be human if we didn't occasionally go for the exotic and the beautiful coins. Go for some.

BTW, if it's an investment for silver and not for a SHTF scenario, a coin dealer, or someone like me if I had the cash would buy or trade for them even if the farmer didn't know.

Balboas are beauties! They are not particularly hard to come by, but every collection of World Crowns should have a few. In addition to the older "Stripper Liberty" reverse you show in the OP photos, there is a newer one on later years like this 1966 (pop ~100,000 after 1971 melts for 20 Balboa production):

Attachment 82369
Attachment 82370

Still .900 in 1966 with AGW of .7735 for the Un Balboa

stripper liberty is far superior IMO

I like the balboas and stack them whenever I find them at a decent price.
I especially like the one that is around 4oz. Nothing like a big heavy silver coin.
